American Speech-Language-Hearing Assocation

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) is the professional organization for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. One function of ASHA is to offer an accreditation program for academic and clinical institutions. The academic accreditation agency is called the Council on Academic Accreditation. It examines academic programs and determines their eligibility for accreditation. The Communication Sciences and Disorders Program at TCU is accredited by this Council. This means that the program must adhere to regulations governing the administration of the academic and clinical programs.

National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Assocation

The primary organization for students majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorder is the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Founded in 1972, NSSLHA is the national organization for master's candidates and undergraduate students interested in the study of normal and disordered human communication. NSSLHA is the only official national student association recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). TCU has a very active local chapter directed by Ms. Lynn Flahive. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in this association.

Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Assocation

The Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) is the state professional organization. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to join. TSHA offers excellent educational and professional opportunities for students at its annual convention.


Texas Licensure

The State of Texas Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology licenses certified speech-language pathologists and audiologists as well as interns (persons completing their clinical internship) and speech-language pathology assistants (SLPA). SLPAs have a bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and work under the direct supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist. A Speech-Language Pathology and/or Audiology license is granted to applicants who have completed their master's degree at an accredited school as well as a nine-month clinical internship, and who have also passed the National Examination in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology. An individual must hold one of the licensure credentials to practice in Texas. The State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology also adopts rules to regulate the practice of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in Texas.

 

Kinesiology Student Association

The Kinesiology Student Association (KSA) is a group of students with a mutual interest in the field of kinesiology and the subdivisions therein.  KSA brings in speakers from around the field to broaden our outlook and further understand what we learn in class.  KSA participates in community service, provides tutoring when needed, and helps our faculty, seniors, and graduate students by assisting in their research.  KSA’s main goal is to foster professional and productive interactions between our professors and students.  Many of our students go on to pursue careers in athletic training, coaching, sports psychology, physical education, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Texas Christian University Harris College of Nursing Student Nurse Association

 

Purpose: The HCNHS chapter of the SNA was started by a group of HCNHS nursing students interested in having fun and becoming actively involved in shaping their future in the nursing profession. Currently, we hope to strengthen the presence of the SNA at HCNHS and increase membership and involvement through:  

  • providing opportunities for HCNHS nursing students that will increase involvement in HCNHS life.
  • targeting SNA activities to address public health issues in health promotion and awareness.
  • offering events for SNA members that provide educational and networking opportunities.  

We feel that participation in student nurse activities will better prepare graduates for the challenging role of the professional nurse.

 

Special Events: In-semester monthly chapter meetings, community service events, attendance at regional and national conventions.

Sigma Theta Tau International
The mission of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) is to provide leadership and scholarship in practice, education and research to enhance the health of all people. STTI supports learning and professional development among its members who strive to improve nursing care worldwide. Learn more about STTI link here http://www.nursingsociety.org/ Beta Alpha Chapter is the Harris College's of Nursing & Health Sciences local chapter of STTI and was established in 1970. Consistent with the STTI's mission, Beta Alpha seeks to promote research and other scholarly activities among its members. The Chapter extends membership invitations to nursing students based on academic merit and to nurses in practice based on scholarly and leadership contributions to nursing. Honors Program

Nursing is working on a new Departmental Honors Plan.

 

Phi Alpha

TCU has the Iota Xi Chapter of Phi Alpha, the national Social Work Honor Society. The purposes of Phi Alpha are to recognize outstanding academic achievement by social work majors, to promote their social interaction, and to stimulate and maintain scholarship in the social work profession. The organization is open to students with an overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.25 GPA in social work courses (based upon completion of a minimum of 9 hours). Information about Phi Alpha is disseminated each spring semester and is available in the Social Work Office.

 

National Association of Social Workers (NASW)

NASW is the national professional organization of social workers. It provides benefits including Social Work, the journal printed 4 times a year; NASW News, the monthly newsletter; liability insurance; political advocacy for the profession and its clients; and other support. Students are encouraged to join early in their major.

 

NASW/TCU

NASW/TCU is student organization associated with the local NASW branch. It is a recognized organization of the University with membership open to all TCU students who are interested in social work and who maintain a 2.0 grade point average. The organization began in the spring of 1978 in order to promote knowledge about social work at TCU, to facilitate communication among students and between students and faculty, to provide mutual support among students, and to promote social action and community service. NASW/TCU sponsors Social Work month and engages in social and community activities.
